Backyard Shed Ideas
There are many backyard shed ideas but this method of building a backyard shed is for a 8 feet by ten feet shed.
You can use different measurements but the construction basics are the same.
Lets start with the shed floor. Click for diagram.
Note: Use pressure treated material only for the garden sheds floor.
- Cut the 10-foot 2x6 rim joists to allow for the 8-foot rim joist. You should end up with a 8'x10' frame.
- Square the frame by measuring the diagonals and make sure that they are of the same measurements. Nail two strips of wood diagonally at two corners to keep the frame square. Click here for diagram
- Starting from the outside edge of the 2"x6"x 8' (front of the frame) make a mark every 16-3/4'' for the joist hangers and nail or screw the hangers from one side - line the right side of the joist hangers to this mark. Do this on both sides of the frame.
- Add a 2x6 girder for extra support. (I like to fasten the girder to 4x4 posts about 2 feet into the ground and one inch lower then the top of the floor joists. One on each end and one in the middle. ) to stabilize the girder.
- Cut the 2x6 joists to 93 inches, fit them on the joist hangers and nail or screw the hangers tight against the joists and to the joists themselves. - Place two sheets of 4x8x 3/4-inch treated plywood down on the floor frame. - Cut the third piece of 3/4 inch treated plywood in half.(Cut lengthwise).
- Now you can nail or screw the plywood sheeting onto the frame. ( Use 2-1/2" decking screws ). Click here for diagramThere you go. You can now build the walls for the shed.
Backyard Shed Ideas - Framing the walls
Framing the walls for the backyard shed is not difficult.
Below is a step by step guide for those who are still not sure if they can frame the walls for the 8’x10’ backyard shed.
Note: A good place to construct the walls is the platform that that you’ve already built for the shed floor. Measurements can be of different sizes.
Steps:
Nail two pieces of 2x4s (16 inches long) one at each end of the platform. - See diagram.Cut twelve 2x4s at 66-1/4 inches long (six 2x4s for each side of the backyard shed).Lay one 2x4x10 feet long bottom plate on the platform (on edge).Place six 2x4x66-1/4 inches long at 24” intervals against the 2”x4”x10feet long bottom plate.Nail the 2x4s to the bottom plate.Nail a 2x4x10feet long top plate to the 2x4s. Make sure the 2x4s are square to the top and bottom plates. Now raise the wall, line it up flush with the edges of the platform and nail it in place. - See diagram.Repeat the above step for the opposite wall.Cut five 2x4x66-1/4 inches for the back wall.Lay a 2x4x89 inches long on edge and in between the two side walls. (Bottom plate).Nail the 2x4x66-1/4 inches long studs at 24” intervals, to the bottom plate and then nail the top plate to the studs to form the back wall. Raise the wall and place it flush with the ends of the two side walls and fasten it to the side walls. Make sure all of the walls are square and plumb. The front wall is built with an opening for the door. Add two inches to the door size to get the rough opening. The two inches allowance is for the door jamb and to be able to square the jamb if needed. - See diagram. Once all four walls are up, you can nail 2x4s the length of the walls. This will double up the top plate. See diagram.
Now the shed is ready to be sheeted.
